Fish fauna of the Great Dismal Swamp.
In 1979 a "comprehensive"
study of the The Great Dismal Swamp was published as the proceedings of
a symposium. This symposium and subsequent volume was prompted by
Union Camp Corporation's gift of nearly 50,000 acres to The Nature Conservancy.
This ultimately resulted in the establishment of the Dismal Swamp National
Wildlife Refuge. Located in the Coastal Plain physiographic province
and on the state line of Virginia and North Carolina this is a unique example
of forested wetlands. The main body of water in the swamp is Lake
Drummond. Although the 1979 symposium and resultant volume presented
a number of comprehensive studies on the mammals, birds, amphibians and
reptiles, and other flora and fauna it omitted fishes. A review of
both published and unpublished information on the fishes of the Great Dismal
Swamp is being conducted.
