Thinking of majoring in biology? What would I do with an undergraduate
degree in biology? The AIBS web page on what a "Biologist"
does or possible careers in
biology. For a longer list of sites which give you information on careers in the biological
sciences click on this link (these sites are always being revised
but most links are active).
Careers in Fish and Wildlife Conservation. The Virginia Department
of Game and Inland Fisheries has produced a list of careers, what the specific
job entails and how to prepare for a career in the various areas of
Natural
Resource Conservation.
If you are a biology major and thinking of going to graduate school there
are several programs offered at schools in Virginia. The programs
offer a Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree
in the biological sciences. Check this site for links to colleges
in Virginia offering graduate
programs in biology. The following web page (by Dr. Gary Grossman)
offers some advice on choosing a major professor for graduate school
(http://www.arches.uga.edu/~grossman/notes.htm). This is "one man's
view" and should not be taken as THE WAY to proceed, however, it will
be helpful to anyone thinking about graduate school.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has an important program for undergraduate
students, Research Experiences for Undergraduates. The National Science
Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for undergraduates
to join research projects each summer. Each REU site has space
for 10 to 20 students each summer. This is an excellent opportunity
for anyone thinking of pursuing graduate study. Sites are located throughtout
the country and they area of research available covers almost all subdisciplines
of biology. Each site has its own deadline for applications and
must be applied to separately. For a complete list of REU sites
in the biological
sciences go to this link. You will find the telephone number
and email address for a contact person for each site.
