FSEM 100j

Group Research Project & Presentation:

This course is a seminar.  In a seminar, the instructor doesn’t do all the teaching.  Rather, that responsibility is shared among all participants.  I plan on leading class discussion for much of the semester.  After that, it will be up to you.  Each of you will participate in a group project to research and present a topic of your choice appropriate to the course.  The project will be similar to what you would do in preparing a research paper, but without the paper.  The presentation will be developed in stages.

Each group will need to

·        Choose an acceptable topic (You will need to get your topics accepted by Professor Greenlaw.)  DUE: Wednesday, October 10

·        Negotiate a presentation date/presentation order.  DUE: TBD

·        Develop an Initial Outline for the Presentation. DUE: Friday, November 2

·        Determine what key elements of the topic the class will need to learn to master, and determine a plan for teaching them.  DUE: Friday, November 9

·        Develop a list of readings for the rest of the class to complete prior to the presentation. DUE: = One week before your presentation date.

The presentation should not be a set of powerpoint slides, though you may include powerpoint as part of the presentation.  Think carefully about what media will best support your presentation to maximize your audience’s learning.

Research presentations could include:

·        Immigration

·        Global Warming/Climate Change

·        AIDS/TRIPS- Intellectual Property Rights

·        WalMart: The best of globalization or the worst?

You needn’t limit yourself to those topics, however.

You should plan on meeting with Professor Greenlaw several times to discuss the various stages in developing your presentation.
