NOTIFICATION TO LOCAL AREA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

(posted August 2006)

To Local Area Nonprofit Organizations:

The purpose of this message is to give local area nonprofit organizations a "heads-up" on a funding opportunity that will be available later this Fall (2006).

The Department of Economics at the University of Mary Washington is offering a course entitled ECON 324-Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector.  The aspect of the course of most interest to you is the semester-long class project.  Thanks to the generosity of Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady Foundation, the class has been given $10,000 which it will use to make grants to local nonprofit organizations.

At this stage, none of the details of the project have been finalized.  Students will create a foundation, write a mission statement, solicit applications for funds, and select recipients.  The class starts on August 29.  The mission statement and application form should be available on or about October 1.  The application deadline will be on or about November 1.  The grant (or grants) will be announced at a public ceremony on Tuesday, December 5.  Additional details will be posted as they become known at the project web page at http://people.umw.edu/~rrycroft/philanthropy2006.

This is the second year the course has been offered.  To maximize the educational value of the project, the project will be student-directed as much as possible.  While we will use what we learned from our experience last year to improve the grant-making process (in particular, last year's infamous application form will be considerably shortened!), this year's course is not simply a continuation of last year's.  I am working with an entirely new group of students who will bring with them their own ideas.  The mission statement may be similar or wholly different from last year's.  We anticipate this course to be an annual offering at UMW for quite some time in the future.

Please feel free to circulate this message among your associates.

I will be happy to answer your questions about the project.  Please contact me by e-mail at  rrycroft@umw.edu or by phone at 540-654-1500.

Yours truly,
