ANNOUNCING

ECONOMICS Foundation $10,000 Nonprofit Philanthropic Grant

(ECONOMICS Foundation = Economics Class On Nonprofit Organizations Mightily Improving Community Services)

Thanks to the generosity of the Sunshine Lady Foundation, the ECON 324 - Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector class at the University of Mary Washington has been given $10,000 which it will use to make grants to local nonprofit organizations.

Mission Statement of the ECONOMICS Foundation

Our goal is to foster positive changes in the community through sustainable, innovative and growing programs in the Fredericksburg area.  We are seeking to fund programs that emphasize educational development, mental and physical health, and/or provide crisis sheltering.

Special emphasis is placed on fledgling programs or concepts for new and sustainable programs.  These may be implemented by both new and established organizations.  With interest in seeing these programs mature and flourish, the grant is available to groups operating in the City of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties.  The grant is not, however, limited only to new programs.

This grant is aimed at impacting lives of people today so that they may not only gain immediate benefits but also be able to see the future in a brighter light filled with possibilities otherwise dark.

ECON 324: Economics of Philanthropy and the Non-profit Sector

                                                                                  July 5, 2005

To Fredericksburg Area Non-profit Organizations:

The purpose of this message is to give Fredericksburg Area Non-profit organizations a "heads-up" on a funding opportunity that will be available later this Fall.

This Fall the Department of Economics at the University of Mary Washington will offer a new course entitled ECON 324-Economics of Philanthropy and the Non-profit Sector.  The course has two components.  One is an academic analysis of philanthropy and non-profit organizations.  The second is a semester-long class project that will be of interest to you.

Thanks to the generosity of the Sunshine Lady Foundation, the class has been given $10,000 which it will use to make grants to local non-profit organizations.

At this stage, none of the details of the project have been determined.  Students will create a foundation, write a mission statement, solicit applications for funds, and select recipients.  The class starts on August 30.  The mission statement and application form should be available on or about October 1.  The application deadline will be on or about November 1.  The grant (or grants) will be announced at a public ceremony on Tuesday, December 6.  Additional details will be posted as they become known.

Click here to read an article about the course that appeared in the student newspaper The Bullet in March .

To maximize the educational value of this project, the project will be student-directed as much as possible.  The instructor--Dr. Robert S Rycroft, Professor of Economics--will stay in the background.  Dr. Rycroft will be happy to answer questions about the project.  Please contact him at rrycroft@umw.edu.

Yours truly,

Robert S Rycroft
