The University of Erfurt in association with the University of Mary Washington is offering a summer course in German culture and teaching methods taught on site in Erfurt, Germany. Located in the state of Thuringia near the Thuringian Forest and the Wartburg Castle, Erfurt lies roughly halfway between Frankfurt and Berlin-about two hours from each city. This bustling city of 200,000 offers a broad range of cultural events, good shopping, and an active nightlife. The surrounding area affords virtually unparalleled outdoor recreational opportunities such as swimming, hiking, running, and mountain climbing.

In the course participants will explore various aspects of this region with particular emphasis on its art, architecture, local customs, and music. Additionally, experienced instructors of German as a second language will facilitate course discussions on new perspectives on instruction for different language skills on different levels. Participants will also attend with the resident director concerts and folk festivals, and visit important historic sites, museums, and galleries in Erfurt, Dresden, Berlin. Day trips to Weimar, Gotha, and Eisenach are also planned.

UMW Studenten in ErfurtFor purposes of the course, UMW has established a link with the University of Erfurt. Participants will have ample opportunity for contact with German teachers.
