About World Language Day

The United Nations declared 2008 the International Year of Languages. In celebration
of this, the Department of Modern Foreign Language Day” on the Fredericksburg Campus,
March 28, 2009.

Its aims are:

  • to strengthen the connections with and reach out to high school students and their FL teachers
  • to demonstrate how UMW as an institution thinks globally
  • to make world languages visible to the community
  • to advocate foreign language learning in general

The day will be filled with fun activities and competitions centered around world languages. Those activities include:

  • spelling bees
  • poetry recitations
  • poster exhibition
  • video/skit screening

To be fair to students of all levels of language proficiency, there are two levels of competition: intermediate and advanced. The languages of competition will be Spanish, French, and German. Our Italian, Chinese, and Arabic programs will offer mini-lessons.

 

 World Language Day, March 28, 2009 (Preliminary Schedule)

 

8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m

Great Hall

Students will arrive with their teachers on UMW campus and proceed to Great Hall where they will receive orientation packages

9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Great Hall

Great Hall in Woodard Campus Center:

Greetings by President Hample and Dean Barra.. A spokesperson from the department will describe the day’s events.

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Combs Hall:

Competitions (Spelling Bee, Poetry, Posters, Video/Skits)

When not competing, students may see the poster exhibition the video screenings. In addition, they may visit information booths about language and other programs as well as go on organized tours of the campus.

1:00-1:30 p.m

Great Hall

Great Hall in Woodard Campus Center:

Students will meet in Great Hall for lunch and presentations by multi-cultural dance groups. A spokesperson from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages will give plaques to participating schools and awards to students who have won the day’s competition.
