Winter Koans I & II:
I. December Jazz
II. January Still Life

Yesterday’s snow

snakes across the

asphalt.

Crows caw-cuss

in silent elms.

Starlings in silhouette

pepper the waning sun.

In angled flights

geese gaggle through

reddening clouds.

A silver slivered moon

pierces the indigo sky.

Beneath a cold sun:

Waves of crusted snow

drift across the lane.

White blankets

the fallow field.

Glistening crystals fall

from sagging branches,

swirl near the fence,

dance in the wind.

Glazed, the rill

runs still.
