Speaking Assignment #1 Requirements

Purpose:

To research and present information to peers about a Web-related topic.

Instructions:

Select a Web-related topic of your choice to research and present to the class. Your topic should include information on some technical aspect related to the Web. The presentation should be 7-8 minutes long. The presentation will be followed by a 3-4 minute period for questions from the audience. Presentations will be made in class on May 23. The presentation order will be selected at random the week before the presentations.

Deliverables:

You are required to complete several pre-presentation steps.

Due Wednesday, May 18: A brief 1 paragraph summary of your topic sent to ernie@paprika.umw.edu. The paragraph should answer the question: What do I want my listeners to know or remember when I’m finished speaking?

Due Thursday, May 19: Your presentation should have 3 main sections: the introduction, body, and conclusion. Develop an outline for each section of your presentation by identifying an item or items for each of the following bullets. Send the outline to ernie@paprika.umw.edu. Include a list of sources consulted while preparing your presentation.

• Introduction
• Write a clear one-sentence introduction that will capture the attention of the audience.
• Give the audience a reason to listen to the presentation (ask a question, state a fact or quote, give an illustrations, etc.).
• How will you demonstrate your credibility through your knowledge of the subject?
• How will you introduce your thesis and preview the content to follow?
• Body
• Identify one or two main points to present.
• Relate the main points to your thesis.
• Conclusion
• Summarize your thesis and main points.
• Identify an effective closing statement.

Due Friday May 20 : You must visit the speaking center on or before May 20.

The presentations will be May 23 in class. Remember that you must attend all in-class presentations or forfeit your class participation points for the semester.

Evaluation:

The instructor will evaluate your presentation. You will also receive peer evaluations from class members. The evaluation forms that will be used can be found on the course Web page.
