Grading Criteria for Class Participation:

In order to participate in class, you need to show up prepared; you need to be attentive; you need to ask questions about anything you don't understand; and you need to make comments about what other people say. The only dumb question is one you do not ask!

Class participation will be evaluated on the basis of the following:

1. Class attendance

2. Frequency of class discussion

3. Quality of class discussion

For a grade of A:

  • You must speak up in class every day or nearly every day.
  • You must regularly make substantive contributions either in the form of probing questions or insightful comments.

For a grade of B:

  • You must make a noticeable contribution to the course through frequent comments and questions.

For a grade of C:

  • You must attend class regularly, but only occasionally speak up.

For a grade of D:

  • You must be absent enough to be noticeable.
  • You rarely, if ever, participate in class.

For a grade of F:

  • You miss a significant proportion of class meetings.

If public speaking is not your strong point, you might want to consult with the friendly folks at the Speaking Center, located at Fairfax House. For more information, see their web page at The Speaking Center .
